Early years
Sam Markel launches an insurance company in 1930 for buses and trucks. It quickly expands and the brand becomes a mainstay of the transportation industry. Sam's sons carry the family business forward.
1970s and 1980s
Tony Markel, grandson of Sam, takes over the firm and begins to diversify the business. By 1980, Markel is moving from transportation into property/casualty excess and surplus business.
The move is achieved by the formation of Essex Insurance Company. Markel becomes a public company in 1986, which helps finance a series of acquisitions over the next 15 years.
2000
The company expands with the purchase of Terra Nova, which marks the birth of Markel International.
2002
Markel International consolidates its operations with the formation of Markel Syndicate 3000 and the creation of five key business lines
2009
Markel International acquires Elliot Special Risks (ESR) and launches an equine and livestock division.
2010
Markel International celebrates its 10th anniversary and launches a trade credit division.
