Markel International’s commitment to charities and to our local community is strong thanks to the support of our employees. We take part in several charitable fundraising events, such as the annual raffle to win a day off and Macmillan’s World’s Largest Coffee Morning as well as non-fund raising activities.
Markel International is a member of The Lloyd’s Community Programme (“LCP”). The aim of the LCP is to promote involvement within the Lloyd’s community and to help improve the opportunities and environments of the people in Tower Hamlets and the neighbouring East London Boroughs.
A number of Markel staff are involved in three partnering programmes. As part of the scheme, MINT employees "adopt" a primary school child for the academic year to help with their reading, numbers and sports.
"Markel is a leading member of Lloyd's Community Programme. The number of Markel employees that volunteered in our East London projects last year was fantastic and ranks Markel amongst the top LCP supports in the Market" - Nick Furlonge - Chairman of LCP
Markel staff took on tasks such as cleaning and painting, making wooden plant troughs, clearing rough ground, getting an overgrown garden under control, and digging and building a frame for a vegetable patch.
Markel also supports The Prince’s Trust. Since The Trust was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976, it has helped over half a million young people. In the past couple of years teams have taken part in the Namibia Desert & The Costa Rica Challenges. The teams cycled, hiked, abseiled and kayaked in extreme conditions, over long distances. Between the two teams they raised £64,000 for the Prince’s Trust.
Markel (UK) Limited is proudly supporting The Princess Royal Trust for Carers. This remarkable charity supports over 300,000 carers in the UK including 15,500 young carers. A carer is somebody who looks after a friend or relative who may be disabled or seriously ill. Many carers have been doing it for years; others are only children who look after a parent or sibling, and sometimes both. For more information please click here.
