Markel and Charities

Markel International’s involvement in the community is strong thanks to the support and commitment of our employees. We take part in several charitable fundraising events each year as well as non-fundraising activities such as the Reading Partners Scheme whereby Markel staff visit a school in Tower Hamlets to help children with their reading.

In June 2007, Markel International became a member of The Prince's Trust.

Youth charity, The Prince’s Trust, helps change young lives in the UK. It focuses on individuals who face more barriers than most, especially young people who have struggled at school, been in state care, are long-term unemployed, or have been in trouble with the law.

With more than 1 million young people not in education, employment or training in the UK, The Prince’s Trust works to help 14-30 year-olds realise their potential and transform their lives. It offers practical support including training, mentoring and financial assistance.

Since The Trust was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976, it has helped over half a million young people.  The insurance sector, more than most, has a direct interest in working to support the work of The Prince’s Trust and it was for this reason that the Insurance Leadership Group, which Markel is now a part of, was established.

The Insurance Leadership Group,  is a unique networking forum for leaders of the insurance industry in the UK that aims to grow charitable support for The Prince’s Trust. Since its launch in January 2006, over £2m has been pledged to The Trust through the Group by 35 prominent members of the insurance community.

It provides members with innovative solutions to their corporate social responsibilities whilst affording them networking benefits with industry peers and potential customers. The Insurance Leadership Group also works to promote employment and training opportunities within the insurance sector.

In 2006, Markel International supported the following charities:

The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust
Cancer Research UK
The British Heart Foundation
Parents for Children
Barnado’s
Breast Cancer research
AHOY Centre
Help a London Child
Trinity Hospice
Little Sisters of the Poor
The Thomas Buxton School Playground Improvement Campaign
