About Markel International


Markel International Limited is the London based subsidiary for the international operations of Markel Corporation, the international property and casualty insurance group headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Founded in the early part of the twentieth century, Markel Corporation wrote gross premiums of $2.36 billion in 2007 and has a market capitalisation of approximately $4.65 billion.  Markel International wrote gross premiums of $696 million in 2007.

Markel International operates in the UK through two commercial entities. Markel International Insurance Company Limited (MIICL), its London based insurance company, operates in the London company market, while Markel Syndicate 3000 is its Lloyd’s 100 per cent owned corporate syndicate.

MIICL is licensed
· for insurance in all EU countries
· has a Surplus Lines licence in 48 US States
· is an Accredited Reinsurer in 44 US States

MIICL can also write insurance in a number of other overseas territories and reinsurance in most countries around the world. Markel Syndicate 3000 benefits from the Lloyd’s global licences and therefore is able to write insurance and reinsurance business worldwide.

At December 31 2007, Markel International Insurance Company Ltd had shareholders’ funds of approximately $313 million and Markel Syndicate 3000 had a capacity for the 2007 year of account of $340 million. 

Markel International has five operating divisions who write business through either MIICL or through Syndicate 3000.
